#21 Fatal Conveniences: Anti-Aging Skincare: The Youthfulness Scam

#21 Fatal Conveniences: Anti-Aging Skincare: The Youthfulness Scam

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to anti-aging skincare. Walk into any pharmacist, and you’ll see shelves lined with promises. Fewer wrinkles, youthful, glowing skin are just some of the claims that these products make. But, when you dig a little deeper, the reality of these cosmetics isn’t so pretty.

Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™

This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society’s Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they’re actually good for us. But it’s those same things that are breaking down our health and the health of the environment around us.

I’ve spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these “conveniences.” On every show, I pick one topic, and we dive into it. My goal is to make you more aware of these traps so you can push back on them. Remember, it starts with you and the choices you make. So, if you’re willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you.

Aren’t the advertisers and marketing teams of these skincare products smart? They’ve made us think that we’re not beautiful and wonderful just as we are. I do get it though. Slowing down the signs of aging and feeling better about what you see in the mirror is something we all want. But you must remember that what goes ON your skin, goes IN your skin.

I’m going further than skin-deep in this segment to uncover some of the hidden toxic ingredients lurking in anti-aging skincare. I discuss mercury and Teflon, the two bad boys lurking within your cosmetics. I unravel just how they affect the body, and the proactive steps you can take to make better purchasing choices.

Other topics from this FATAL CONVENIENCES™ SEGMENT:
  • Why you should vote with your dollars
  • The keywords to look out for when checking cosmetic labels
  • Would you put Teflon on your face?
  • The FDA’s take on anti-aging products
  • Some of the signs of mercury poisoning
  • What are the things you can do?

Episode Transcript

Darin: It’s that time of the week for another fatal convenience. This is a bite-size segment that addresses some of society’s fatal conveniences in the steps you can take to avoid becoming a victim of them. I define fatal conveniences as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to Dash tap water, shampoo, sunglasses, food. I dive into the hidden truths behind some of our everyday choices that could not only be harming us but even killing us, so let’s dive in.

Darin: Everybody, welcome to a fatal convenience episode. I’m stoked, I’m excited to empower you today. This is not about taking away from you. This is about empowering you to take your power back. And the more I look at all of these fatal conveniences of toxic exposures, of products that are made with not awareness of the end consumer, the more I’m aligning with businesses and entities that are creating solutions, so I want you to know that. Behind the scenes of all of this weight of conveniences, I’m actually finding more and more companies wanting and actually doing the right thing, so that’s a great thing and we need to be aware of that. And we also, what I say all the time, is vote with your dollars Spend your precious money on the companies that care about you that I making, in this case, we are talking about skin care and anti-aging creams and we need to spend the money on companies that are actually doing it correctly and looking out for you because we have to look at those companies that are understanding that what you put on your skin is essentially exactly the same as opening up your mouth and going inside your body because transdermally, you’re pulling what’s going on in your skin in through your skin and being absorbed in your blood and now your body has to deal with it. So don’t be duped by marketing buying into the fact that you’re not beautiful and wonderful just as you are, but I get it, aging and feeling better about yourself, you look yourself in the mirror. We all want to look and feel better, but we have to understand the toxic ass closure is a major, major problem. So I’m going to highlight very important aspects and chemicals that are showing up specifically in that anti-aging skin care kind of world. And again, the convenience is we get hit with marketing things, the lines will go away, your skin will be softer and smoother and all of this other stuff, that’s the convenience. The flip of it is it’s what’s going on your skin is going in your skin so the toxic exposure that unfortunately these companies are formulating with is where it’s getting us. So the first one, I want to bring to your attention is mercury. Mercury in all forms is very detrimental to the body. It kills biology without a doubt and that form when it’s isolated and put in cosmetics and anything and it shows up environmentally in our food and all of that stuff, very, very detrimental to the body. It’s like a pinball of free radicals flying around the body destroying the body. So the things you want to just be aware of is any time someone is saying anti-aging, just have your radar up. Or skin lightening, Those are the triggers to have you look deeper. Just hang back a second, do due diligence. So some of the keywords that you want to make sure that are triggering you and showing you that there’s mercury, we are going to have this in the show notes as well and links to all of these research, so one is mercurous chloride and calomel and mercuric and mercurol and then just plain mercury. So these are the things obviously you want to stay away from. They are weirdly spelled in different chemical structures of the same thing of the detrimental mercury. And those products, again, are the skin lighteners and anti-aging “treatments” that “remove” try to say that they are removing age spots and freckles and blemishes and wrinkles, these are the things that are also showing up in adolescent creams and stuff so make sure you are also looking for that because it’s about the blemishes and trying to use that stuff. So mercury, big no-no and will get more into that as well but the other thing that I want to bring up is the PFOAs and the PTFEs, perfluorooctanoic acid and PFOAs. And PFOAs, I’ve also brought up is a teflon. So would you put teflon on your face? Do you know that nonstick stuff I brought up in dental floss, that Glide dental floss, guess what? PFOAs all over in it. Hormone disruption linked to and kidney disorders linked to in the research there and we have that in the show notes on that side of it on dental floss. So PFOAs now are showing up and saying would you want to put that non stick chemical on your face? So this is another one probably in the same products. They can have both mercury and PFOAs. Again, they are going after anti-aging cream and face powders, so that chemical, that nonstick chemical is what they are trying to use and sell you as makeups and lotions and try to go after your marketings. Chemical industry is amazing to me, the ways that they are trying to come into this and sell their products. These PFOAs have been absolutely toxic and the chemicals have linked directly to cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive harm. So just think of the PTFE is literally the trade name for teflon. So people, I read this stuff out loud and I still can’t believe it. And I think you know this by now, but the danger is shifting back now to mercury. You have a little bit of freestanding mercury and you literally die. So the micron use of this mercury is slowly destroying and contaminating. So the danger isn’t just people who use mercury contained products but it’s also their families. And this is from Arthur Simone, MD, a senior medical adviser at the FDA. So the off-gassing of any of this stuff, so think about it women, if you’re in doing your makeup in the bathroom or whatever, the skin care stuff and you have these PFOAs or mercury in your cosmetics, specifically the mercury off-gassing can be easily linked and connected to your children and they’re infinitely more susceptible. So your family might breathe mercury vapor is released from these products, your children might touch washcloths or towels that are contaminated with this mercury, and it could be as simple as touching someone’s cheek or face is what Simone said, this medical doctor at the FDA. This is straight from the FDA, people. The organization, let’s just point out, let’s take a pause, the organization that’s supposed to protect you is telling you how toxic these ingredients are. What? How is that possible? So do you think the organization is effective? The FDA should be fired. They are not effective. They’re understaffed, probably underpaid and they’re not effective. So they’re coming up with articles probably to protect themselves. It’s just crazy. This is from the FDA and they are supposed to regulate this stuff. Well, a lot of it does come in illegally and then the labeling is not even done correctly, but here’s the thing, it can show up on shelves. There’s no regulatory to stop those from showing up on shelves, it’s only when someone is hurt or that the product is outed and then the attention of the FDA, but there’s no way that they’re regulating any of this stuff. So particularly obviously, pregnant women, nursing with babies, Young children are extremely vulnerable. Mercury toxicity goes right through and through, so if you’re a woman putting in any anti-aging stuff on your face and you’re breast-feeding, you’re directly inoculating your children With mercury and that’s very detrimental to the developing brain and the nervous system and goes right into also to the newborns and also through breastmilk and whatnot. And we already know this is a crazy thing the children born this day have a minimum of 200 carcinogenic compounds that are in umbilical cords upon children being born. so I don’t want to be a Debbie Downer. What I want you to do is be aware of the things that you’re buying so that you don’t get toxic exposure. So some of the signs of mercury poisoning, it’s kind of like everyone right now and that’s irritability. It’s just kind of silly but this is on the FDA website, Irritability, tremors, changes in vision and hearing, memory problems, depression, numbness and tingling in your hands around your mouth. Go down that list, everyone is going through that right now. And the PFOAs are definitely directly linked to cancer, hormone disruption and kidney problems. I’ve got a lot of this research connected to this episode and so my biggest question is, how do these things even end up in the products? I don’t know. I have no idea. This is crazy.. I can just imagine that the conflicts of interest, not funded enough, not caring enough that a lot of the cosmetics and food and pharmaceutical interests actually live and work and are employed by the FDA. So conflict of interest are probably the number one that they are just overlooking this stuff, putting our little articles to cover themselves, so I just don’t get it. So basically, no one is really minding the store. All the products hitting the shelves, there’s actually no one really looking at each product. So these organizations, BPA, FDA, USDA, go down the list, they’re failing. We need to recreate all of these agencies. From my point of view, just fire everybody. Let’s just start over. So what are the things that you can actually do? Well, we need to minimize our exposure, that’s number one. So by not getting the exposure is going to be your biggest, biggest thing for all of these. So when you’re looking at these products or skincare and they’re saying anti-aging and lightning and all of that stuff, probably first and foremost, all of them have nasty chemicals beyond the PFOAs and the PTFEs and the mercuries and the teflons and all of that stuff. They probably have other chemicals in there. So you need to be aware of all of the other names that they’re providing. And again, we’ll put this all in the show notes. So we need to be smarter consumers. And we also need to push back on the protective laws of all of these agencies. And again, congress, FDA authorities, we need to push and we also, number one, do not even buy these things from your cover girl has been outed as having many of these chemicals and more chemicals in there. And it’s just cutting corners, so the demand has to shift. And the demand is about me informing you, you informing yourself and making other choices. And then you proliferate that to all of your friends and people you care about who are not going to affect themselves and not going to affect their families. So follow the show notes making sure that you’re avoiding the mercuries and all of the iterations to mercury, PFOAs, and the teflons. Avoid at all costs. Don’t buy these products. Again, health comes from within making sure you’re eating your plants, your drinking your water. That’s going to affect your skin I promise you infinitely more than all of this stuff, as well as when you’re buying these products, they’re botanically-based and they’re organic and they’re chemical-free and that of course, they’re PFOA, teflon-free and mercury-free and all of these things. So that was a big one, but women, please listen, all of these miracle things, if they’re not botanically-based and if you can’t eat these products, then do not put it on your skin and don’t fall into the victimization and the leverage that they’re using on you on your insecurities. We’re all insecure, that’s what marketing is getting all of us. So don’t buy into it. I love you. Keep your eyes and your wits about you and till the next time. Thank you for tuning in. Love you.

Darin: Thanks for tuning in. I hope that left you feeling inspired to take a closer look at the things you might be doing that could use some tweaking. EP#20 Suzanne Somers on Discovering Your Strength In a Sea of Adversity

Suzanne: So the first flow is being fired at the height of my success on Three’s Company for having the audacity to ask to be paid [00:16:34] with the men at that time who were all making 10 to 15 times more than me and my contract is up so I had to renegotiate, but shortly before me, Laverne and Shirley had negotiated and gave ABC a [00:16:47] so they decided that they had to put a stop to this. So I came along next and they fired me before my husband even walked in the door to negotiate. There was no negotiation. So what are you going to do? At the height of my success, am I going to be mad and use all my energy and be mad because I was one lone voice. Not one woman came to my aid and I understand, they are all afraid too but there was no going back.

It would be great if you can list “The keywords to look out for when checking cosmetic labels” in a text format, so consumers can check their products straight away.

I have been making skincare for over a decade now and I am so glad you put this out there. The real truth about anti-aging is that the best treatments to stave off the effects of it are simple and cost very little: Drink lots of fresh clean water, eat a diet rich in whole plant foods, get at least 7 hours of sleep each day, get outside and get some regular sunshine on your skin, and get some form of cardio fitness each day. Skincare can help you but it wont cure you of aging. In fact many synthetic concoctions can increase your aging by weakening the skin, clogging pores, or adverse side effects from transdermal penetration.
