#21 Fatal Conveniences: Anti-Aging Skincare: The Youthfulness Scam

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to anti-aging skincare. Walk into any pharmacist, and you’ll see shelves lined with promises. Fewer wrinkles, youthful, glowing skin are just some of the claims that these products make. But, when you dig a little deeper, the reality of these cosmetics isn’t so pretty.

Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™

This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society’s Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they’re actually good for us. But it’s those same things that are breaking down our health and the health of the environment around us.

I’ve spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these “conveniences.” On every show, I pick one topic, and we dive into it. My goal is to make you more aware of these traps so you can push back on them. Remember, it starts with you and the choices you make. So, if you’re willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you.

Aren’t the advertisers and marketing teams of these skincare products smart? They’ve made us think that we’re not beautiful and wonderful just as we are. I do get it though. Slowing down the signs of aging and feeling better about what you see in the mirror is something we all want. But you must remember that what goes ON your skin, goes IN your skin.

I’m going further than skin-deep in this segment to uncover some of the hidden toxic ingredients lurking in anti-aging skincare. I discuss mercury and Teflon, the two bad boys lurking within your cosmetics. I unravel just how they affect the body, and the proactive steps you can take to make better purchasing choices.

Other topics from this FATAL CONVENIENCES™ SEGMENT:
  • Why you should vote with your dollars
  • The keywords to look out for when checking cosmetic labels
  • Would you put Teflon on your face?
  • The FDA’s take on anti-aging products
  • Some of the signs of mercury poisoning

Thanks for the reminder! I’ve had a serious level of Mercury Poisoning and it is good to know where to look for it!

It would be great if you can list “The keywords to look out for when checking cosmetic labels” in a text format, so consumers can check their products straight away.

Hi Darin! Can you spell out the chemicals to check for on labels please? It would be super helpful! Thank you for this great information.

I have been making skincare for over a decade now and I am so glad you put this out there. The real truth about anti-aging is that the best treatments to stave off the effects of it are simple and cost very little: Drink lots of fresh clean water, eat a diet rich in whole plant foods, get at least 7 hours of sleep each day, get outside and get some regular sunshine on your skin, and get some form of cardio fitness each day. Skincare can help you but it wont cure you of aging. In fact many synthetic concoctions can increase your aging by weakening the skin, clogging pores, or adverse side effects from transdermal penetration.
