Doing Time & Changing Lives | Doug Bopst

#44 Doug Bopst on Doing Time and Changing Lives

We all make choices in life. Sometimes those choices come from a place of pain and desperation. Sometimes those choices come from a desire to change and grow. It’s up to us to put the intent behind the decision. Changing your life is about making different choices.

WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW.

I’m Darin Olien, the “superfood hunter”. On this podcast, you’ll hear honest conversations with extraordinary people that inspire me. I hope that through their knowledge and unique perspectives, they’ll inspire you, too.

Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same. We want to save the planet. So we’re going to try, one conversation at a time. If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world while learning new angles on health and nutrition, you’re at the right place.

Doug Bopst has served his time. Now he’s using his time for good.

Doug is an award-winning personal trainer, author, speaker and podcast host. But before that, he was a drug addict and a drug dealer. After a judge found him guilty of “possession with intent to sell,” Doug served several months in prison. Forced to detox from a pain pill addiction in his small cell, he knew he had hit rock bottom. But a conversation with his cellmate changed everything. I’ll let you hear the details directly from him in this episode.

It was that same cellmate that inspired Doug to devote his life to fitness. It’s a passion that now fuels his entire life’s mission. Today, Doug works to help other people overcome their pasts and make more productive decisions for their future. His three books  From Felony to Fitness to Free, Faith Family Fitness and his latest, The Heart of Recovery all detail his story and similar stories that have inspired him.

Doug’s podcast, The Adversity Advantage,  gives people a platform to share their stories of hardship and struggles, and how they overcame them to create good in the world. Telling his story to those it could help is probably his favorite thing about his journey. This is evident in the many speeches he’s shared with companies, organizations and schools across the country.

In this conversation, Doug tells me about his tragic backstory but also his triumphant journey. We get into his lowest points as well as his proudest moments. He touches on all parts of his recovery, including realizing the need for a spiritual outlet, not just a physical one. Fitness was instrumental in changing Doug’s life. Now he’s paying it forward. I’m so excited for you guys to hear all about it.
