How We Can Live More Efficiently Together | Stephen Brooks

Now more than ever, people are searching for a better way. A better way to live, a better way to eat, and a better way to help their fellow man. We’ve always known the answers, but we’ve somehow forgotten them along the way. We have to work together collectively to bring about a healthier planet for us all.

Welcome to The Darin Olien Show.

Stephen Brooks has so much to teach us all.

And he’s still learning, too! You may remember Stephen Brooks from my Netflix show Down to Earth, which I co-host with Zac Efron. You’ll see Stephen on episode 3, where Zac and I traveled to Costa Rica to visit Punta Mona, one of the oldest and most bio-diverse permaculture education centers in Central America.

What is permaculture, you ask? Well, there’s no better person on the planet to explain it to us than Stephen Brooks.

Stephen grew up in Miami, Florida, and always felt a strong pull towards nature. He had over 600 gallons of fish tanks in his family home where he took care of jellyfish, lobsters, fish and sea creatures he didn’t even know the name of. It’s that same instinctual curiosity that led him to move to Costa Rica and discover a better way to live.

Stephen firmly believes that we must treat the Earth as an extension of our own bodies. If we treat it well, it will provide us with everything we need to live a happy, full life. Permaculture expands on that belief, by stressing the importance of comradery with our neighbors. We must work together in order to thrive.

In this episode, Stephen and I have such a fun and enthusiastic conversation about everything he’s working towards in Costa Rica. His passion is infectious, and together we explore how you can take more of a vested interest in where your food comes from and why that is so vitally important. So take a little time and listen to my boy Stephen explain the magic of permaculture and how you can incorporate a bit of it into your life.

IN THIS EPISODE:
  • How it all started with a Grateful Dead concert
  • Stephen’s “aha moment” while living in Spain
  • Wisdom from Stephen’s late friend
  • How we vote with our wallet
  • What is Permaculture?
  • We all have the same goals, whether we realize it or not
  • A little bit about Ecoversity
  • Why we all need to unlearn
  • This Episode’s Fatal Convenience™ topic: Monocropping vs. Organic Farming

Love love love this episode! Been a big fan of yours – you brought me to the show, not Zac’s abs haha! The episode with Stephen was one of my favorite because that’s the life I want to live so it resonated with me! Keep spreading the word! Oh, if you’ve never heard a 2 year old say “baruka nut” it’s the cutest thing ever! My daughter requests them 🙂

Darin- the reference….the abs-does this mean you read your email? Zac or no Zac…Off-robing for an ice bath, it was your abs that “had me at Hello..”, Great dive on permaculture and all things Olien this episode. For those who dare to dream of Costa Rica surf and magical, sustainable communities, thanks for the break down. Keep preachin’ the Fatal Conveniences. We take them (and your abs) seriously 🙂

Enjoyed this podcast, I was excited to learn that Stephen Brooks was a guest. I had to listen asap. The Episode on “Down to Earth” was inspiring and awesome, we think we watched it 3 times. I am so stoked to try Jack Fruit, we finally found a local source. Good to hear about regenerative farming and permaculture, exciting to learn more.
