Top 10 Fatal Conveniences™

On every episode of The Darin Olien Show, after a thrilling conversation with an amazing guest, I dedicate some time to dig into some uncomfortable truth. We get into society’s Fatal Conveniences™, the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they’re actually good for us. But it’s those same things that are breaking down our health, and the health of the environment around us.

I’ve spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these “conveniences.” On every show, I pick one topic, and we dive into it. So if you’re willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you.

Human beings can’t survive more than three days without water. In the United States, we are incredibly lucky to be able to walk a few feet to our kitchen sink for a fresh glass of hydration. What a luxury. Or is it?

In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, we get into the toxicity of tap water. We rush to the faucet to fill our glass with what we think is a healthy liquid that our body needs, but instead, we end up with a cup full of chemicals. Not only do we drink this toxic cocktail, but we also bath in it!

We’re all doing our bit to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. Social distancing, gloves, self-isolation and wearing face masks are all part of the norm now. But there’s one hygiene practice that is a chemical nightmare. Do you really know what you’re putting on your skin when it comes to hand sanitizers?

In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, I get into society’s obsession with hand sanitizers. Okay, so they can play a role in helping to stop the spread of harmful bacteria and viruses, but there’s also some irreversible damage being caused to the good guys too.

Plastic. It is one of the most convenient materials we have. It’s cheap to make, easy to produce and can be used for just about everything. But, if you really knew the damage it causes, would you be brave enough to use it at all?

In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, we get into the toxic chemical cacophony of plastics. Now, trust me, I get it. From bottled water to the toothpaste we use- it’s almost impossible not to have it in our daily lives. But, what we think of as a simple convenience is, in fact, drastically damaging our health and the environment around us.

Technology has sure come a long way in the last few decades. We walk around with a mini-computer in our pocket all day. Our refrigerators and washing machines can talk to us. We can turn off the front lights of our home while driving in our cars. Sure, all this stuff is convenient, but it comes at what cost? Sadly, the cost is deadly electrical pollution.

What are EMFs and How do they affect us?

In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, I explore the recent influx of Electromagnetic Fields, otherwise known as EMFs. I was first told about the possible dangers of EMFs fifteen years ago, and it’s only gotten worse since then. We are reaching a critical point in the electromagnetic pollution that surrounds us, and it’s time to do something about it.

Did you know that there are 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic on our planet? Yes, that’s billions with a capital B. Every time you purchase single-use plastics, like water bottles, coffee pods, q-tips, or baggies, know that they will most likely sit in a pile somewhere on our planet, forever.

In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, I go over the dangers of single-use plastics, which you’re probably using every day. It’s not just that they can harm us by leaching toxic chemicals into the things we eat and drink, but they’re hurting the planet, on a massive scale.

What’s the one thing you put on your body every day? For most of us, we don’t want to sweat the small stuff, so deodorants have become a staple in our regular hygiene routines. But, many readily available deodorants are harboring some hidden dangers.

In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, you’re going to hate me for this one, but hopefully, you’ll be grateful by the end. This important discussion is all about deodorants. Each day, we swipe on a plethora of chemicals that keep us “smelling fresh” and stop us from sweating.

Now more than ever, we look to our doctors and healthcare workers to keep us safe and well. Don’t get me wrong, doctors and nurses are heroes! There are so many amazing people in the healthcare industry working tirelessly in this pandemic. But our healthcare system as a whole is broken. And so is our attitude towards wellness.

In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, I get into the United States Healthcare System. I value doctors. I really, really do. But when pharmaceutical companies can push their greedy hooks into our healthcare system, control the prices, and incentivize prescriptions, we’re all in trouble.

Oral health is directly related to overall health. We need to take care of our teeth and gums by brushing and flossing daily. However, some products that are marketed for oral health actually contain toxic chemicals. Let’s take a closer look at dental floss.

In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, I get into certain ingredients in dental floss that can be extremely toxic. Specifically, we’re looking at floss labeled with words like “glide” or “slide.” The chemical used to make your floss easy to glide between your teeth is also used in fast-food wrappers. It’s called PFA, and it’s proven to wreak havoc on the body.

Do you love that fresh laundry smell? How about crisp, warm sheets straight out of the dryer, or a newly laundered shirt in the morning? I think we all do. But, do the big laundry detergent corporations have your best interests in mind? Sadly, we’re often lining their pockets while we unwittingly sacrifice our health.

Are Your Clothes Really That Clean?

In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, I explore the seemingly innocuous world of laundry detergents. I mean, we all launder our clothes in a bid to get them clean. But, what you’re choosing to use for your weekly wash, could be doing you more harm than good. Many big brands promise “whiter whites” and “the ultimate clean,” but in fact, their products are dowsing our threads with a toxic chemical cocktail.

Have you ever felt so terrible emotionally, that you want to stuff it all down, lock it away and reach out for something more comforting? To really blossom in this life, sometimes we have to turn that around and flip the negative into a positive.

How Are You Feeling?

In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, I’m hitting on a totally different kind of topic. We’re looking at why you shouldn’t be ignoring your emotional anger. When it all hits the fan, so many of us lock our emotions away or reach for the bad stuff. But, by repressing your anger, guilt, or shame, you’re only going to make things worse.
