Setting goals is an important part of life. We set goals to achieve things in both our professional and personal lives. But does achieving those goals really fulfill you if they’re not part of your bigger purpose? Instead of setting goals, you need to find your big thing, and then you need to go after it.

As a successful leadership coach, Jeff Patterson has helped so many people create results in their lives. He is also the author of The Big Thing Effect: How to Transform Your Life Forever, which launches on October 18th. In his book, he explains more than just how to set goals– he explains how to find the thing that makes you come alive. So many of us tend to make excuses as to why we can’t pursue the things we’re passionate about. Jeff explains so eloquently that when you do find your big thing, everything else tends to fall into place.

So Jeff, Why is goal setting important?

Growing up, Jeff felt the need to try to control his surroundings. Unfortunately, this is a common trait among kids who grow up with divorce. He quickly learned that although he may not be able to control the outcome of situations, he certainly could help people make more informed decisions. As Jeff got older, he realized he had a natural gift for coaching. And although he was pursuing an acting career, it quickly began evident that he had found his “big thing.”

I met Jeff over 20 years ago, and since then, he’s been a constant source of encouragement for me. I can’t even tell you how amazing this guy is at helping people wade through the fog and see their true purpose clearly. Because, after all,  the path to personal success is so much more complicated than just setting goals. Sure, setting goals is important. But you need to find your true North, as Jeff says, and when you do, you’ll find your big thing.
